What Is WEEE?
WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. The UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013 establish responsibilities for the separate collection, treatment, recovery and recycling of electrical and electronic products.
These regulations cover a wide range of electrical equipment, including electronic vaping devices, and place obligations on relevant producers and distributors.
Why Recycling Matters
In the UK, unwanted electrical items and equipment contribute to one of the fastest-growing waste streams. Electrical equipment and batteries contain valuable materials that can be recovered and reused.
Improper disposal can create environmental and safety risks. Lithium-ion batteries, including those found in rechargeable vaping devices, can cause fires if damaged or crushed during waste collection and processing.
Recycling through appropriate facilities helps ensure electrical waste is handled safely and recoverable materials are processed responsibly.

Electrical Equipment Recycling Symbol
Electrical equipment is now marked with a symbol to remind you to recycle your electrical equipment.
The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol indicates that electrical equipment and batteries must not be disposed of with general household waste.
Products displaying this symbol should be collected separately and taken to an appropriate recycling facility.
How to Recycle Electrical Equipment and Vaping Devices
Unwanted electrical equipment, including vaping devices, should be taken to an appropriate electrical or vape recycling collection point.
- Do not place vaping devices in general household waste or mixed household recycling bins.
- Use designated collection points that accept the relevant type of electrical equipment.
- Where batteries are built into a device and cannot be safely removed, recycle the complete device through an appropriate electrical or vape recycling service.

Battery Recycling
- Do not place vaping devices in general household waste or mixed household recycling bins.
- Use designated collection points that accept the relevant type of electrical equipment.
- Where batteries are built into a device and cannot be safely removed, recycle the complete device through an appropriate electrical or vape recycling service.

Battery Recycling
Used batteries require appropriate collection and treatment due to potential fire and environmental risks.
Where batteries can be safely removed from electrical equipment, they should be taken to a designated battery recycling point.
Batteries that cannot be safely removed should remain inside the device and be handled through an appropriate electrical recycling service.
